Is life a miracle or an inevitability ? One thing is certain. Life happens in a far from equilibrum context. Life needs a termodynamic gradient to use as a source of energy. A termodynamic gradient is an information potential, that allows for structure and form to appear, as if Prigogine dissipative structures, are the way of the universe to reduce more eficiently the energy gradient, or to say diferrently, as if the creation of order, is a direct consequence of the second law, the creation of disorder.

The division of scientific paradigms, is described in several questions. Is the Universe a particle or a wave ? Is the Universe a machine or a emergent creative process ? Can we simulate the organic with the machine ? This celular automata, replicates the fundamental energy flow in ecosystems. From chaos, order emerges, stable spiral structures that represent the food chain energy flow, between predators and preys.

Science has been for almost one hundred years, divided between two conceptual views of reality. On one side, classical mechanics, where everything is a particle, and signals can’t travel faster than light. On the other side, quantum mechanics, where everything is a wave and entanglement can create instant correlations between systems very far apart. Both views explain very well their own domain. The very big, for classical mechanics and the very small, for quantum mechanics, yet nobody has been able to build a unified theory that integrates the two. So, is the universe a particle or a wave ?

Can the lighning strike twice in the same spot ? At least we know that fractal structures can make fractal paintings. The image in the canvas is made copying the energy level of the lightning branches. Because the lightning is a fractal structure, the result painting keeps that same structure althought with another representation. So a fractal process, generate fractal patterns…

After Newton, the metaphor for understanding the Universe, was “The Mechanism”. The Universe was a complicated machine, with an absolute time and eternal laws. Science had the task of identifying the laws and parts of this machine. This led to the reductionist view of the Universe.
Recently, science has been throught a paradigm shift. The new metaphor for the Universe is “The Creative Process”. The Universe is an evolving structure, sel-organizing and creating new properties. Science is trying to understand not only the parts, but the whole. This is the emergence view of the universe.

Fractals can be seen not only in biological systems, but in physical systems too, like geological ones. Moutains, rivers, they all exhibit a fractal nature. So using a fractal process to generate an heightmap, we can easely mimic a planet with its mountains and seas.

Self similarity, and fractal structure can be obtained, repeating the same process, in different scales. Nature does it everywhere. So if we use a iterated function system, with a scale transformation, we can create natural patterns.

When we look at the past, we see an universe, with less complexity and more homogeneous. So the question arises naturally. Where does order comes from? What are the roots of form? A model was presented in 1951 by Alan Turing in his paper the chemical origins of morphogenesis. Two chemicals react and diffuse. Instability due to differente diffusion rates, makes the chemicals play a order generation pattern.
